Unified is a school club at the middle school and high school. Unified means I have students with and without disabilities in this club. Each student with a disability is paired with a student without a disability. We compete with other schools in Special Olympics.
We work on communication skills, building social skills, advocating for ourselves and each other, reading books with each other, and participating in fun activities which bring our abilities together.
My Project
I am the Unified advisor at our High School. Team sports bring people together. Special Olympics Unified Sports® teams do that, too and much more. About 1.4 million people worldwide take part in Unified Sports, breaking down stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities in a really fun way. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team to compete competitively. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
In Unified Sports, training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding while being competitive at the same time.
That makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.
