My students are self-sufficient, understanding, and goal-focused. They do their best with what they are given and try to bring others up with them. DonorsChoose projects have helped them realize what they are capable of achieving when they work together and have brought high quality materials into their classrooms.
This year, they'll be coming into their first year of standardized testing and it can be daunting, but they are up to the challenge.
All they need is a the right resources to stretch their capabilities.
We need a consistently formatted reading comprehension journal for each student to start our day off on the right foot. This consumable reading comprehension journal is one previous classes have used with great success. It provides daily fluency, explicit answer, and short response practice that becomes a comfortable routine without becoming repetitive. Using this as a bell ringer provides a wake up call of sorts for the school day and engages my students immediately.
My students need to make the most of the time we have available in our academic day and being able to spread a selection over multiple days, with a different comprehension focus each day, maximizes our time.
The consistent format combined with engaging texts provides an excellent scaffold for investigating and reviewing a variety of genres efficiently.
