My Students

Our students come from hard-working families who don't always have a lot of money. They're good kids who want to learn! I'm proud to say that, despite our challenges, parents in other areas of our city send their children to us because they know we have a learning environment here.

We work hard at our school and we know that learning must be enjoyable to be educational.

We get our hands on our learning every chance we get. It could be using cheetos to dust 'pollen' from flower to flower, dancing out our anti-bullying rap, or forming an island out of play dough to demonstrate our land forms.

My Project

With the turn to Common Core math, my students are delving deep into some of the topics that, honestly, I think we were just expected to magically grasp when I was in school. Splitting up a multiple of ten, using a tape diagram and a number bond, etc. Through teaching this math for several years now, I have come to believe that these are difficult but necessary skills to understand to get deep into the heart of numbers.

Our routines during our math block are wonderful in many respects, but I would love to let my students use these requested horizontal abacuses to get their hands on the numbers we are using.
