My students have no lab equipment for Science and in grade 8 they start more technical, hands-on labs and without equipment they cannot perform these essential labs.

"LAB SUPPLIES! Calling all lab supplies!"
I teach 8th grade Science and Language Arts in a very high poverty school district. I have about 25-30 kids in each class and most of the students in 8th grade are not at an 8th grade level. The school is also an Impact school model; meaning we got a technology upgrade. This is great to have the technology for the school and especially Science, but what good is the technology if you do not have the lab supplies to go with it?
In 8th grade Science there are a lot of labs that introduce the idea of more complex labs; such as Chemistry. There are great labs that they could do, but because we do not have supplies I feel the students get cheated out of an experience that is pertinent for high school labs. I know that if the supplies were available and the students could do hands-on learning their grasp on concepts would be far more advanced than in the past.
Chemistry is a very large part of the Science books, about 6-8 chapters. There are labs about acids and bases, litmus paper, periodic tables, cells, and different earth cycles that have outstanding activities but require things that I do not have in my classroom. For example, by having litmus paper and test tubes we can do the acid and base labs, the beakers we can use for almost every lab in the book, and the basic lab supplies will be beneficial for the students to get hands-on, real-world experience.
From the help we receive we can make a vast improvement in their hands-on, real-world experience to Science. They can take pride in a job well done on a lab that they couldn't have done without the supplies. Then, last, but certainly not least, the light bulb will come on!
