My Project

My name is Alston Alika Albarado, M.F.A. (a.k.a. Kumu Alston or Mr. Alston). I am the Hawaiian Studies teacher at JES in Honolulu, Hawaii. Due to my background in theatre for young audiences, I strive to constantly integrate less "traditional" teaching methods into my curriculum; most notably place-based learning, social-emotional learning, and differentiated instruction.

As we approach the end of 2022 and prepare to enter 2023, there are a number of goals and New Year resolutions I would like to accomplish for my students. One huge goal for my classroom is to get everything more organized! My classroom is not messy by any means, but the current status of the organization is not up to my level of expectations. Occasionally, I find myself or students struggling to locate specific art supplies or writing utensils; this accumulates to a few seconds or minutes of time spent trying to locate the necessary items for the current lesson. With just a little more organization, we can spend more time completing in-class projects instead of just preparing to complete them. The requested items from this project include bins and storage containers to help me begin the process of re-organizing my classroom supplies and materials, while also ensuring they are properly stored when not in use.

JES is located within Waikiki across from the Honolulu Zoo. At JES, more than 50% of students are Black, Latino, Native American, and/or Native Hawaiian and more than 50% come from low-income households. Due to these factors, JES is categorized as a Title I school. Funding is always limited and your donations and gracious support are deeply appreciated.
