Wagging Tales Social Emotional Learning

Help me give my students stuffed "pets" to accompany a curriculum developed by our SPCA. I will be teaching this curriculum on-line due to Corona Virus and have included the books from the curriculum plus "pets" for adoption.

My Students

Our students need materials at home to accompany my lessons due to coronavirus.

Over 20% of our students have been relocated from all over the world as refugees.

It is important for books and materials to be both windows and mirrors for them, so they can see themselves. In this case, have their own "pet" to care for.

Our students are in a high poverty urban school in Maryland.

About 80% of our students are considered below the poverty line and receive free or reduced-price meals (FARMS). About 20% are coming to us through the refugee center. They have many and varied educational experiences depending on the culture they had to flee from. We also have a large number of special needs students.

My Project

I will be teaching online this fall and as the school librarian has some flexibility and want to provide a variety of family programming. Our SPCA had been coming to school with dog "ambassadors" for the past few years with their Wagging Tales Literacy and Humane Education program. I will be continuing with an extension program that includes the books listed for this grant.

I love how the program explicitly teaches a variety of emotions by looking at dogs, so many times the students can only name a few; angry, sad, happy.

I plan on entering all names of students participating in a spinning game wheel. The weekly winner will choose their "pet" or book and I will socially distantly deliver to them. I am sure this will help greatly with participation and the scholars will LOVE having a stuffed animal or book of their very own!
