Help me give my students some waffle makers and crepe pans. We are starting a unit on breakfast foods soon, and I would love to teach my students the art of making waffles and crepes.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a large underprivileged city and underfunded school system. These students are dedicated, determined, and they thirst to learn.
I am in awe of the fact that their surroundings and varied hardships, do not dim their enthusiasm for education.
One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch.
My students take my class to learn to cook for themselves. We make everything from scratch. They learn how to cost out a recipe, the method to correctly cooking and baking that recipe, and then they get to eat their results and judge not only how they did with the recipe, but the recipe itself and what they might do to change the outcome.
My students often struggle to verbalize or write about on paper what they think or feel; Culinary Arts is their motivation for coming to school and an area where they have success or excel, providing an important balance in their total educational experience. Our hands-on class allows my students to experience a different approach to learning. They work in groups with people they might not feel initially comfortable with, but they learn to be more comfortable, tolerant and open through their involvement in the creative.
My Project
My students want to learn all things culinarily, and I want to make sure to prepare them so they can enter a restaurant kitchen feeling comfortable and confident. I want them to be able to apply themselves to whatever prepping and cooking task is asked of them.
Many of my students are disengaged with their education and the school community.
They often don't show up to school, and when they do, they don't attend their classes. In school, there are many social conflicts, with fights breaking out daily. My culinary class offers these students a safe refuge. It engages their minds in learning in an applied way. While they are cooking and baking, they are learning Math, Science, and English. they are also learning to interact and work with their peers, promoting engagement and harmony.
Giving them an opportunity to learn in a different way, truly fosters their connection to their learning. When we make something that they enjoy eating, we encourage them to learn all about what goes into its creation. We start from learning about the recipe and costing out the recipe. Then we move into making the recipe, trying it and having others in the school try it, then we reflect on the whole process.
In our culinary classes, we create snacks and meals for the students and staff of the school. My students get to interact with their school community, forming and solidifying relationships with their teachers, administrators and other students. They end up forming trusting and supportive relationships. Creating food helps my students to make connections with their culinary classmates and the school at large; helping to engage them not only in their class work but also in the community of the school.
