My Students

My students are a very diverse group of children with one thing in common; they all attend an urban, public Montessori school. Eighty-one percent of the students qualify for free lunch and 88% of the students are a racial minority.

We follow the teachings of Maria Montessori to meet the needs of the whole child - physically, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually through following and allowing the child to guide his or her learning.

I am fortunate to be in a school that sees music as an integral part of the child's development and encourages musical growth and expression.

My Project

We just started beginning band two weeks ago and students get their instruments this week! My clarinet players are ready and rarin' to go, but they need appropriate reeds and ligatures to hold those reeds onto the instrument!

My students are so excited about beginning band!

During our tryouts, my typically chatty group was sitting in complete silence every time a new instrument was introduced. They were enraptured by the demonstration and knew the fastest way to try the instrument was to quietly listen first.

We need soft reeds for the students as they learn, new ligatures as most of ours are in poor condition, and a conductor's score for me to be able to conduct the students appropriately!
