My students need magnetic letters with the vowels distinguishable and hands on vowel activities.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"There are five letters that we know and vowels are what we call them, A-E-I-O-U." There are so many songs and chants to learn about the vowels, but every year my students still struggle remembering which five letters make up the vowels.
My students are a fantastic, diverse, and motivated group of children who want to read!
They come to school every day ready to take on whatever I have prepared for them. In my classroom I have a wide range of abilities. I have students who do not know their alphabet, and then I have students who are reading a whole grade level ahead. Many of my students speak English as their second language. Most of them speak Spanish, but this year I have Somali, Burmese, and Karen as well. Along with that I have three students who have moved to the United States in the past year. My students are passionate about learning and I am passionate about my role in assisting them.
My Project
We are asking for magnetic letters that have the vowels a distinguishable color. These are essential to my classroom for many reasons. Vowels are a vital piece to building a strong reading foundation. Every word has a vowel. Without vowels our words are unintelligible. When becoming a reading learning the vowels, both long and short, is essential for success.
In our classroom we do word work twice a day (spelling). In first grade spelling is very hands on. Adding magnetic letters to our routine will provide the students with the opportunity to build and manipulate words. They will be able to do this with me during whole class, small group, and independent work time.
The teaching tubs and magnetic sorts will provide another hands on activity for students during small group and literacy center time. I will use the tubs to teach the sounds and we will sort the objects together. Then the students can apply what they have learned and practice independently.
As an educator my biggest goal is to instill the love of learning in my students.
Every single day I see them with the passion to become a reader. I want to help them become a successful reader. Providing me and my students with these materials will allow them to build their confidence in their short and long vowel sounds, which in turn will build a strong reading foundation for all my students. Thank you for helping me plant the seed for a life long learner.
