Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school are creative, passionate and curious. My school serves a diverse population and is part of a diversity pilot project in NYC. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix because we believe that integration and equal access benefit everyone. Students with special learning needs are fully integrated into the classroom, and everyone's learning benefits as a result.
This year, our class is a rowdy and lovable bunch: 30 joyful kids who love to learn and explore.
Anything they hear or read about, they want to know more. They have a wide range of learning needs and I want to make learning fully accessible to each and every one of them! These kids care a lot about social justice and making the world a welcoming place for everyone. They are passionate about topics such as sustainability, politics, school integration, and feminism, to name a few.
My Project
Fourth graders who love to read can go through a lot of books, and our classroom library can't keep up with them! Some of the kids in my class visit the upstairs library three times a day to swap out their library book. Wouldn't it be nice if they could find their heart's desire in our classroom library?
My coteacher and I are dreaming of a library refresh to bring excitement and momentum to our reading instruction in the coming months.
We want each child to have a delicious chapter book, a toothsome graphic novel, and a tasty nonfiction book on deck at all times. We also need to replace the much-loved favorites which have vanished into backpacks or fallen apart from wear and tear (I'm looking at you, Ripley's Believe It Or Not!)
At this point in the year, we know our students well as readers and as people. We have had five months to listen to their book requests and think hard about their learning needs. We are ready to put our knowledge to work and give them the classroom library of their dreams!
