My Students
Despite its name, middle school is never interrogated with the interest of college as a "liminal space" for a child's growth and development. It's often washed over and diminished in our reflections about our school experience as a "hoop-to-jump" in order to get into the serious business of high school.
My students are playful, good-hearted and full of life, w and they demonstrate bravery by bringing that energy to school while surviving the streets of North Philadelphia.
Every single day, my students remind me about how dangerous that assumption that "middle school is unimportant" is and that the inherent desire to learn exists in every student, every step of the way.
I am a new teacher in North Philadelphia and I teach ELA and Social Studies for 8th graders.
On paper, it is my "job" to lead students to the tune of a standardized curriculum, but I share a different imagination that has been co-created with my students and mentors alike. It is our responsibility as a society to nurture and encourage our student's curiosity in the face of discouraging environments and low expectations and as an educator, I take full responsibility to be the conduit for hope for them.
My Project
I am a very new teacher and upon entering the classroom I recognized that there are not a lot of available materials to ensure the success of my students. The folders will be used in order to hold them accountable for their reading and writing assignments. The big easel will be used for community guidelines and graphic organizers in order to process and understand content. Other materials such as the construction, glue, scissors are going to be used for art and crafts projects, namely so that they can have control as to represent key facts and details in social studies.
