My Students

Do you remember the world before video games, when we spent hours wearing ourselves out, playing outdoors? Today, one out of five children suffer from childhood obesity and faces a future of health challenges as a result. One of the best ways to fight this epidemic is physical activity.

My sixth grade students live in a small rural town and attend a K-6 elementary school.

They come from middle to lower income families with a large percentage being Hispanic. They are bright, excited, and eager to learn, but have limited opportunities simply because of their location and socioeconomic class. Most enjoy physical activity, but have never had the chance to learn the skills and enjoyment of organized sports. Our school is a Title One school which means the tax base that funds our programs is at the lowest level in the nation. Purchasing supplies for anything outside the core curriculum is difficult at best.

My Project

We recently instituted a daily physical education class for our sixth graders, and I would love to see my students using as much of this time as possible learning and participating in team sports. This will be a perfect way to teach cooperation, discipline, and teamwork, while promoting fitness and health. I have already lined up some great instructors to help teach volleyball skills to my students if we can get the proper equipment. With these good quality volleyballs, my students will be able to learn the basic fundamental skills of serving, bumping, and hitting, as well as the more advanced skills of discipline, playing a position, and communicating on the court. Having these skills will help them to love fitness and encourage them to remain active throughout their lives.

Physical Education is such an important part of our curriculum.

It helps fight our growing problem of child obesity and promotes physical fitness. Our Title One school is sorely lacking in the basic team sports equipment that is so vital to this program. With your help, my students will improve their self-esteem, learn to love being active, and learn valuable skills such as working as a team, and depending on, and communicating with, one another.
