Help me give my students engaging stories that not only build their reading skills but also reflect their identities—books with characters who look like them, share their experiences, and make them feel seen.
Instilling a love of reading in Black and Brown children creates a powerful and lasting impact. When students see themselves reflected in the books they read, it builds confidence, validates their identity, and fosters a stronger connection to learning. Culturally relevant books encourage joy in reading, which leads to increased engagement, stronger literacy skills, and improved academic performance. More importantly, reading becomes a tool for empowerment, imagination, and self-expression. By providing books that reflect their lives and voices, we help students feel seen, valued, and inspired to reach their full potential.
