Living in southeast Kansas, my students do not get a very diverse look at the world we live in. Their perspectives are often one-dimensional.
I want them to see our world through the eyes of others who are not like them.
I want them to be able to make comparisons and draw conclusions about the similarities and differences in the lives of culturally diverse people. These literary selections are chosen specifically to do that. I want them to have a chance to taste the flavors of different American experiences.
These voices from the fringe are different from the voices they hear in their everyday life and the voices they hear in much of the literature we study.
