My Project
Students this year will complete a senior project in Government called "Voice, Choice, and Power"--a community service based research project that they complete in pairs. The pairs of students will select an issue important to them, research the roots of the problem, and identify solutions to help inform, support, or make a difference related to that issue. In doing so, students must select an action to complete within their community. These items will aid students in creating graphics to promote their events that can be posted around campus and in the local community. Their action choices in the past have ranged from an informational session held on the campus to attending a local government meeting and voicing their concerns. In previous years, students have focused on ideas such as community cleanliness and creating a petition to have combined trash and recycling bins on campus. Another prime example from last year was access to affordable dental care--students held an informational session on campus for students regarding the services offered through our school that are within the community for all to access--students and families. There are several other campaigns that come to mind (access to birth control, health care, youth homelessness)--regardless of choice, students will need materials to record their research and create their graphics, which is the primary use of the materials within the list.
