Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of the students that will benefit from this project participate in a therapeutic, self-contained, special education program. Our students receive services due to social, emotional, and behavioral issues. These students are all identified as high risk due to their ongoing history of disengagement from school based on truancy, academic barriers, and behavioral needs. The resources included in this project will assist us in providing students with items they can use for project-based learning which has been proven to increase student engagement in schools.

The students in the RISE receive their instruction within the program due to their inability to find success in traditional classroom settings.

These students benefit from project-based learning opportunities which allow them to acquire academic success in non-traditional methods. This has been proven to increase academic success. The materials requested will be used to allow students to learn vocational skills in the design and then distribution of unique school pride gear. They will develop skills using technology for creating designs which can then be cut and transferred onto the shirts. Students will also work on marketing and business skills as they develop plans that could be used for the distribution of items they have created.

My Project

This project has been developed to provide students with materials that they can utilize for a project-based learning initiative. The students in the RISE program have been working on the creation of original HPHS designs. They will use technology resources, which the program recently acquired, to create shirts. Students will then have to develop business plans for how they would market and distribute their original items to a mass market.

The students in the RISE program will benefit from the hands-on and real-life activities which this inter-disciplinary project provides.

They will be able to utilize skills that are not traditionally emphasized in classrooms as they are encouraged to think critically and stir up their creativity in the design and mock distribution of items they have created.

The emphasis on creating a school shirt has also already begun to foster a greater sense of pride and engagement in their learning community. Students want to wear their own designs and this has allowed them to remain within compliance of the school's uniform policy while feeling a great sense of pride over their place within the school. My students are excited about the work they have already started and cannot wait to see and wear their final products.
