This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Trying to learn science concepts without knowledge of the meanings of the scientific words is like taking a bath without water. The students need this dictionary so that they can have the same advantages as others and find out how to use the proper terminology during lab discussions.
My students this year are sixth and seventh graders in a charter school in an urban area.
They are finding that to use the proper terms is quite difficult when they don't have access to appropriate resources. They demonstrate an eagerness to learn about science and display attentiveness during classroom exercises.
My Project
My students need 20 hardbound dictionaries to use in science class to get the most out of vocabulary links. I plan to use the dictionaries for vocabulary lessons at the beginning of each learning unit. The dictionaries also have diagrams and charts which will be helpful in explaining the terms and some concepts throughout the learning units. Students will be able to look up information independently to find answers to their own questions.
I believe that enhancing this knowledge of vocabulary can increase students' word power and their ability to visualize how things work.
Having hardbound dictionaries that contain science-specific entries will greatly impact these students and those in the years to come.
