This year when we began Music classes, I performed a variety of music for each class on my violin. My Third Grade students were very excited by this and wanted to know when they could learn to play the violin. I promised them it would happen this year.
My students desperately want to play the violin.
This is my school's second year of having Music. All of our classroom instruments have been supplied through donations and the generosity of the community. My students are sweet, hard-working, and earnest. Our school is a Title One school with 99% of students receiving Free and Reduced lunch. Their families are supportive of their children and the school, but many cannot afford to rent an instrument for their child or pay for private lessons.
My Project
With these violins, my students will be able to work together and with college student volunteers from a local university to learn to play the violin. They will work in small groups and share the instruments with each other. The college students will help to facilitate teamwork and serve as role models for my young musicians. My students will learn to work cooperatively as a team, acquire musicianship, and most importantly, they will achieve self-confidence and discipline.
My students cannot begin to learn the violin without at least 5 more instruments.
I have been able to secure half of the instruments we need with donations. I am hopeful that we will benefit from the kindness of others in our search for enough instruments for all. My students and I are so very grateful for everything that we are given. My students will use these violins throughout their time at my school, and when they go to middle school they will have the confidence they need to be successful.
