Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at Darwin World Language Academy in Chicago. My sixth grade students come from first generation immigrant families who have made a conscious choice to preserve their cultural heritage through language. The goal of our program is to graduate students who are fully fluent in both English and Spanish.
The students in my gifted class are avid readers, devouring 3-4 books a week. This is fabulous. The vast majority of these books are English language. This is not so fabulous. Our students' capacity to write in Spanish and their desire to speak it drops off dramatically in 6th grade. This stems in part from a decreasing availability of good Spanish trade books and a publisher-instituted cut-off of Spanish language textbooks. As of 6th grade, students no longer have visual input in Spanish!
Our school has very little money for materials, Spanish language books are difficult to find through donations, and most parents work low wage jobs (all students qualify for free lunch) so have little disposable income to spend on luxuries like books. I would like to acquire more high interest Spanish books for our classroom library to build vocabulary, grammar structure, and maintain my students' linguistic development in both languages.
