Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class is a part of a Deaf school K-12. The school's mission is to provide bilingual education (ASL and English) to Deaf students through using their knowledge of ASL to become proficient in their second language, English.
Our class consists of highly motivated, bilingual Deaf students!
Many students in our class have some level of language deprivation, due to lack of access to sign language. Our students are working twice as hard because they are learning in ASL and English for every subject!
Our students require many visual and tactical supports because they don't have access to auditory lessons (watching videos with sound, songs or read aloud books). Teachers of Deaf students have to create Deaf friendly activities to engage students visually because that is how they learn best!
My Project
These materials will help provide visually pleasing lessons to my students. The projector mounter will allow our classroom to become more Deaf friendly. Our students sit in a semi-circle so everyone can have access to what everyone is signing. A cart or table with a projector blocks visual access in the classroom.
Help my students have their own set of dry erase markers, so we don't have to share during COVID!
We use them for math and English everyday. Students test each other and participate in games using the dry erase markers and stands. They get used up quickly! The stands are important for Deaf students because if they are working with a peer and they need to explain something on their board, they need to have both hands free to sign.
The photo paper is to create clear, visual access to pictures or a picture of a sign, the details of the hands and the facial expression are important for students to see.
