Visualizing DNA

My students need a model kit to better understand DNA and all of the associated concepts so central to the subject of High School Biology.

My Students

Teaching students about DNA, its basic structure, packaging, replication, transcription, translation, and other associated concepts is a huge challenge. Although fascinating for some, the idea of something essentially invisible being so central to life is strange and intangible.

My students have incredible potential, and are achieving a level unprecedented in our school's history.

Our API is higher than ever before and the number of students in AP and honors classes on the rise. We have a great deal of room for growth, and I am working to build the amazing science program we've created and maintain at SCHS!

My Project

The potential for use of this model is endless. Understanding DNA on multiple levels (Genetics, mitosis, evolution, protein synthesis, etc...) is integral to biology. I plan on making this model a centerpiece in my classroom, and using it regularly both in a lab and lecture setting to help students visualize the molecule in a number of different contexts.

The days of overhead projectors, filmstrips and transparencies are over.

Students need dynamic visuals. Computer animation, interactive simulations, and models are integral as resources in the teaching process as we move forward with student populations today. My goal is to use these kinds of resources to inspire students, and illicit intrinsic motivation to better understand the world around them.
