My Project

Students at or school are driven and motivated to learn. Our students thrive off of visual thinking, manipulatives, and models. These especially help our emerging English speaking population as they navigate a challenging curriculum of high-school biology taught in English. Our students absolutely love hands-on labs, something that can be limited based on the curriculum we are given.

Your donations will help fund the purchase of cell microscope slides.

Students will be visualizing different processes in cells, such as how cells divide to reproduce, and how cells are protected by a membrane that lets in specific nutrients. We can connect these topics to growth and sports: cells divide to help a child grow, and water and salts pass through the membrane and cause a person to feel thirsty during a workout. With these science materials, we will also conduct experiments with enzymes to show how different chemical reactions in the body keep people alive. Students will use catalase to simulate the liver breaking down toxic hydrogen peroxide, and will use universal indicator to show how pH (acidity) can affect how fast the catalase reacts. Students will also use glucose solution to test how different concentrations of sugar affect the size and health of a cell by using dialysis tubes.

With these supplies, we can open the minds of our students by showing them a glimpse of real scientific research. We can also provide access to our multilingual learners and special needs students by providing a visual and kinesthetic opportunity to practice concepts taught in class.
