Visualizing a Visual Culture: History of the Deaf Culture
Help me give my students taking American Sign Language experience the history of the Deaf community in the United States. This excellent, short history provides a firm foundation for understanding the development of the Deaf community in America.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are highly motivated, hard-working young ladies who are preparing themselves to become first-generation college graduates. All of my students are female, approximately 75% of my students come from a culture of poverty, and over 90% represent ethnic groups underrepresented in the sciences.
These young ladies are eager to participate in science and engineering and require resources to augment their learning.
In addition, my students enjoy participating in visual and performing arts. My students enjoy being challenged with new discoveries and are active participants in the laboratory and in the classroom.
My Project
Students at my school can choose to take American Sign Language as an elective. These students learn the culture, history, language, and experiences of the Deaf community and become advocates for this culture. To provide a firm foundation in the development of the culture, my students learn about the history of the deaf community.
Providing students with a copy of A Place of Their Own: Creating the Deaf Community in America will allow students to learn independently.
Funding for elective classes is difficult to find, so supporting the acquisition of these books would allow my students an opportunity to receive a reference they can use throughout the year as they learn about the remarkable Deaf culture and history.
