Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach special education at a Title 1 Victory school that serves a community of low-income families. The demographics at my school are: 69% Hispanic, 17% African American, 8% Caucasian, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 4% other. Many of our families are also African and Syrian refugees. Our school helps our students with services such as tutoring for extra reading support, tutoring for our English Language Learners, and providing a Parent Resource Center for food, clothing, paper goods and information on community resources. Our special education team teaches students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.

Our classrooms are inclusive so students with special needs are included within their grade level classrooms.

This allows students who are struggling, to get extra instruction since the general education teacher and the special education teacher collaborate to customize education for all the students.

My Project

My students need help to become 21st-century learners by exploring new ways to express their creative ideas. Many of the students who struggle academically love using technology because it is a place that allows them to showcase a different set of skills. Video is a medium that students respect in schools. It provides alternatives to linguistic expressions and it is “real world”.

My students will be able to use the Go Pro camera to record and reflect on their learning in literacy, speaking and listening, mathematics, and media.

Often, students with special needs struggle with writing but have the ability to express their learning verbally. Using video gives these students the opportunity to showcase their learning in an alternate manner. Listening to themselves gives students additional opportunities to reinforce the concepts they've learned. They can also review and evaluate what they've learned. Students can watch their videos and gain insight into their learning and their progress. Students can also use videos to help teach a concept to a peer or a younger student.
