Visual Voices: Exploring African American History Through Graphic Novels

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The graphic novels in this project will provide my students with powerful, visually driven stories that center African American voices—narratives that are too often missing from traditional textbooks. Through visual storytelling, students can better grasp complex historical and social concepts, making the material more accessible, memorable, and emotionally resonant. These resources will enrich our district’s first-ever AP African American Studies course, helping bring the curriculum to life and fostering deeper connections with the content.

My goal is to help students see that history is not a single story—it’s a vibrant mosaic of experiences, perspectives, and voices.

Graphic novels offer a unique, engaging way to explore African American history and culture, allowing students to think critically about the past while feeling empowered to shape the future.

My students are curious, thoughtful, and eager to explore stories that reflect both their own identities and those of others. They come from diverse backgrounds and are hungry for learning that feels real, relevant, and inclusive. This project will show them that their stories—and the stories of others—are not only worth telling, but worth studying.
