My students need lots of visual supports. We live off of velcro and lamination in my classroom as students with autism struggle with auditory instruction/direction but do extremely well with visuals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My special needs classroom for 3rd-5th graders is a place of challenge and discovery. Students in my classroom spend their year building upon academic skills and individual needs to help them better understand the world around them and how to navigate it.
The students in my classroom are students with autism.
They routinely work on communication skills as well as functional academic skills. They are often eager to learn but have difficulty completing tasks independently. The students are a great bunch of kids and it is a joy to work with them.
My Project
We use velcro and lamination for just about everything/every space in our room. We utilize visuals throughout the classroom to help our students understand tasks, schedules, routines, and direction. We use lamination/velcro for file folder activities, individual schedules, map for just about any task/operation you can think of. This helps our students better understand their space as well as what is expected of them. Depending on the student, schedules/routines are changed daily or even 15 minute periods.
In my classroom we break our day up into segments and have rotations from station to station to break up our day/work space into specific areas.
With this organization of our classroom we use visuals for what time it is, what task we are doing, and what is coming up next. The lamination sheets and velcro help with building schedules for the students. The timer will give my students a more visual representation of how much time is left within a segment. As of right now I am having to run to the computer to reset the timer which can be a distraction to the students as well as myself. With this timer I will be able to set the clock for however much time is needed while still being able to stay at my work station and ensure proper transitions from station to station.
