Visual Supports for Student Independence

Help me give my students the visual tools that will empower and support their independence during our day. Our pocket chart daily schedule and small group rotation pocket chart will benefit all learners.

My Project

Consistent and predictable routines empower students!

When students can rely on relevant visual supports, they can focus on their learning.

A typical day for second graders contains independent, partner, small group and whole group learning times. It's a lot to keep track of! A posted daily schedule pocket chart will show our class where we are and what to expect next. Students will add their own labels and picture cues in a second pocket chart along side of the typed up activities. This will be the beginning of how we build community in our classroom together.

As we are learning, a visual timer will give us a quick and accessible way to pace ourselves (We are still practicing how to tell time in second grade). Fun magnets will point out the important pieces on our anchor charts and learning notes.

Need a partner? Our school mascot is a lion, so students will find their paw magnet lined up next to their buddy for the week. When it's time for small group work, we will all be able to see exactly what each student will be doing for every day of the week using our small group pocket chart.

Each year, I have at least 5 different languages represented in my classroom. About half of my students are English Language Learners. The easier I can make it for them to help themselves navigate their day, the more attention and energy they have to focus on learning.
