My Project
My 7th-grade students are very visual learners that especially connect with stories that reflect their community. Many students are reluctant readers that are more successful and confident when reading is supported by visuals and cultural relevance.
Graphic novels like "Hāmākua Hero: A True Plantation Story" help make history accessible, and engaging - for all learners.
This graphic novel tells the true story of Katsu Goto, a Japanese immigrant who stood up for workers' rights on Hawai‘i Island. His story will invite my students to reflect on Hawai‘i’s history and the importance of speaking out for what’s right.
Graphic novels like this one don’t just boost reading engagement—they help students analyze visual and written narratives together, improving both literacy and media literacy. As students interpret dialogue, facial expressions, layout, and symbolism, they’re learning to think critically and communicate more deeply about complex issues. These are vital skills in our modern world.
This second set of books will ensure that more students can access this powerful story. With enough books, I can collaborate with our English Language Arts team to create an impactful cross-curricular unit that blends historical inquiry with reading, writing, and critical analysis. More books mean more opportunities. Thank you for your time and support!
