Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I (low-income) school in East Oakland. The majority of our students are immigrant families from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and the U.S. They are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.

COVID-19 has them learning from home in a zip code with the highest rate of infection in the county, and with new stress and responsibilities as they help hold together households with family members who have lost employment or been directly affected by COVID-19.

My Project

During crew, students meet in small groups with teachers to engage in social emotional learning. For many teachers, crew was our best attended class during distance learning. We've noticed that our most popular advisory activities are art-related -- from the butterflies we made for "Butterfly Effect" project to raise awareness of child migrant detention to the Diversity door decorating contest to sketching monsters. Additionally, as I've been taking student requests for summer materials, I was surprised to learn that the most popular requests -- more popular than even slime kits, Uno, or water balloons -- have been sketchbooks.

To give students an outlet to express themselves as they face drastic life changes due to the Covid-19, I am requesting quality mixed media visual sketchbooks so students can engage in art activities while they are at home.

Students can use these sketchbooks both on their own and to participate in Zoom advisory act activities, culminating in a final book-making project. I've noticed that as simple a change as giving students real watercolor paper instead of printer paper can make a world of difference in how they approach an art activity -- when students sense that a teacher's interest in them and in the materials we work with together is something extremely serious, I believe they feel honored and empowered, and respond seriously and thoughtfully. Their feelings, thoughts, and artwork as they experience a historic moment in time are so important, and I hope that the art activities made possible by these journals will help students explore their emotions, gain personal insight, and develop both their coping and artistic skills.
