Fourth grade is an exciting step before the last step of elementary school! I am a first year Special Education teacher working in Brooklyn, NY with students with autism. My students are enthusiastic learners with amazing abilities and have many different sensory needs. We are a class of eight students, all eager to learn. We are currently located in a STEM school, and the goal is to have these students be included with their other peers as much as possible by learning to be comfortable with the environment around them.
My students are amazing learners who learn the best visually.
Our classroom is their safe haven, where they are provided with the best supports that heighten their abilities while strengthening the areas they need improvement in. My goal is to do the best that I can to have them achieve their personal goals as well as achieving grade level goals.
My Project
My learners have special needs that can be supported with the necessary materials. My students have issues with abstract concepts as well as issues with executive functioning. A simple direction can be overwhelming for them, and they need to visually see in order to understand what is being asked of them. Through guided instruction step by step through an overhead projector, my students can have a better sense of understanding.
Students become more confident in their work knowing they have their own supports that they know how to use.
As emergent readers and writers, my students have difficulties with vocabulary and expression through words. With their own special dictionaries, students can independently expand on their vocabulary knowledge and improve reading and writing skills. This provides them with the confidence and knowledge to successfully move onto the next grade and not let their areas that need improvement severely affect them.
