My students need art supplies including modeling clay, felt, paint, paper, scissors, and more! We'll be using these materials to create models of content being studied.
"Arts integration involves the whole child. Students become immersed intellectually, emotionally, physically and therefore rigorously in the learning experience" (Lynch, 2007). We hope to use the different materials to help students expand their learning by integrating content with art.
My wonderfully creative and curious students are in grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade.
They visit me once a week to engage in place-based and project-based learning activities that incorporate STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). They attend a Title 1 school in a high poverty area.
My Project
My students visit me once a week for project-based learning activities at our school's neighborhood non-profit organization named Hoa 'Aina O Makaha. It is a 5-acre space that it is an outdoor classroom, which includes a garden for every grade level, farm animals (chickens, goats, sheep, ducks, geese, turtles, honeybees, rabbits, fish, and more!), and plenty of areas for observations, investigations, and social interactions. I want them to be able to apply the knowledge they are learning in their outdoor space in a creative and artistic way, using the art materials requested, which will help build connections and understanding to their academic content.
Donations to this project will allow children to express their knowledge of a subject in a unique and authentic way.
"Art gives children the means whereby they can engage in personal expression unencumbered by language. For the diverse learner, arts experiences are a potential medium through which they not only engage in self-expression but also convey knowledge" (Johnson, 2007).
