My Students
How do you learn? Do you grasp a thing right away when it is told to you? Imagine telling someone something and instead of comprehending right away, they give you a blank stare. My students are visual learners and oftentimes written words mean just random letters written on a page.
My students are mild to moderately mentally retarded high school teenagers with hearts of gold.
They love to learn, but some do not know how to read at all and a few read between a pre-kindergarten to 1st grade level. So they are VISUAL learners who process lessons when shown LOTS of visual aids such as pictures or when we model for them. Our school is an occupational training center, which means we teach life skills to prepare students for work and make them as independent as possible when they graduate. In my class they are learning life skills such as brushing their teeth, combing their hair, how to dress appropriately for the weather or for a special occasion and how to prepare simple meals for themselves.
My Project
By having a camcorder, I would be able to record my students practicing brushing their teeth and show them where they were brushing correctly and where they need to improve. The digital camera would be useful in creating a picture book for sequencing steps in order to follow a recipe. I would use the printer to print out vivid photos for our picture books, so that the students can use it as a guide to complete a hygiene skill or recipe.
By supporting my project you would be the key to opening a whole new world of visual comprehension for my students and giving them the support to get one step closer to a more independent life.
