My Students

Our teen moms come to the library to research topics from science and technology. Recently, they built telescopes and began research about astronomy from many cultures. Now they would like to create a puppet show for the pre-school class located in our building.

Our students come to our school when they are expecting and stay to finish their high school work.

We have a collection of baby and toddler books to encourage young moms to read early and often. Many of the classroom lessons feature activities or projects that they can do with their little ones when they are older.

My Project

Students will research astronomy from Africa, China, Native Americans, Mayan as well as Arabic scholars and Galileo. They will write brief, interesting facts to share with 5-year-olds. Then they will write a short puppet show. They will create puppets that reflect the different cultures. They will present the play to the pre-schoolers. Because many of the students speak Spanish, the play will be bilingual. As a follow up they will teach the little children how to each make a simple star puppet.

Our students will learn to take research and make it clear, interesting, and understandable for young children.

They will create puppets and a short play to share with a real audience of 5-year-olds. They will teach the children how to make a simple puppet. They will reflect on all the steps of this project and discuss what worked and what could be improved. Finally they will discuss how they can use similar skills (simple stories, puppets, creative projects) with their own children.
