Vision Board

My students need dry erase markers and a new white board for visual representations to support their language development because they often struggle to hear instruction that is given orally.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of the students in our school are from a pretty affluent part of Chicago where academia and culture are fully integrated into all aspects of each child's life. However, the students that I work with have hearing losses that negatively impact their language acquisition from birth, ultimately holding them back from reading at grade level. These students require direct instruction by a teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing which can be pretty hard to come by. Chicago Public Schools has only a few locations city-wide with classrooms where students with hearing loss can get the support they need. Thus, my students are bused to our school from all over the south side of Chicago. These students are often not from the aforementioned affluent area, so they rely on school to provide them with a safe place to grow and learn about the world and the many kinds of people that inhabit it.

Students with hearing loss rely heavily on visuals, graphics, and written language to learn!

My Project

Students with hearing loss are constantly fighting to gather information that is given auditorily. In most classrooms, a majority of instruction is given verbally, including directions and examples. In my classroom, I pick up the slack that my students' hearing loss provides by giving them plenty of visuals.

Due to their hearing loss, my students require visual representations for complex concepts, simple directions, and concrete examples.

I create anchor charts by the dozen. I type out and print directions and instructions for everything from simple assignments to large projects. I write our schedule and agenda for each day. I even provide pictures of examples, and when I can't find a picture online, I usually end up drawing complex concepts in a concrete and visual form.

As you can imagine, my white board has seen some serious use and I am always running low on flip chart paper. My markers are all worn out and tired! We need chart paper, dry erase markers and a new white board. Getting more supplies for creating visuals will help my students succeed in my classroom!
