My Project

The materials chosen will assist in teaching many math concepts as well as provide some science and someplace nice for the students to relax and watch the fish swim and plants grow. Some of the lessons I will be teaching my students with aquaponics are the perimeter, area and volume of a tank, the length, height and width and then when you add fish you will have a quadratic equation. I would also like to teach them about rates of change as the water pump transfers the water at 120 gallons per hour. With this system I am also able to teach about fractions, ratios and growth rates of the plants and fish. It is math you can see, touch, feel and think about not just drawings and numbers on a paper.

Not only math but science and many other lessons can be taught through the aquaponics system.

Life lessons about responsibilities, conservation, and sustainability to name a few others. As a middle school special education math teacher, this would be a tremendous help with giving students a hands-on and real life example of certain concepts in math. I would be able to show the actual water filling the three dimensional tank and show the actual water getting pumped at 120 gallons per hour as well as getting the students to measure the actual growth of different plants. With all this information, I would also be able to show the information they collect on a graph and move into slope intercept form and functions. Writing this has made me think more about its possibilities and has provided even more lessons I could teach.
