This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school has earned achievements in California Distinguished, Title I High Achieving and a National Magnet of Excellence Recipient. It has a diverse student body of 850 students in grades ETK-5th. 82% of the students receive free/reduced meals. My TK students are developing social-emotional and oral language skills, and early literacy and numeracy skills. My students are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. Their enthusiasm and love for learning at school now needs to be transferred into their homes during these unprecedented times.
COVID-19 has epically impacted the teaching and learning of my students.
They joyfully listen to books read to them, they sings and dance, they draw pictures and create art crafts, build structures, and pretend play throughout the schooldays to help develop the whole child. As many come from under-privileged homes where resources are not readily available to them and where technology is scarce- they need to transition to receiving effective daily lessons via daily video conferences, recorded lesson, and video watching all with limited materials.
My Project
Having updated technology at home will help me deliver quality instruction online during this quarantine time as well as after the school closure. My 8 year-old computer is missing keys on the keyboard, it is slowing down and the volume isn't working well and this causes disruptions for students during video conferences which causes disruptions. I am unable to hook up to a printer cable feature because the USB drive is crooked and I am unable to make materials from home to use as visual props for teaching. Ultimately, I am unable to provide the best education with my outdated computer! My students deserve better and are surely not only missing out being at school but also on what could be the best for them!
With updated technology, I will have the virtual ability to Zoom to connect with my TK Scholars, record asynchronous lessons to provide continuous learning, and print materials and resources that are visually stimulating to 5 year-olds during home lessons.
This project will aid me and my students through the COVID-19 crisis together, and allow me to give my TK students the best education while they remotely learn. All the materials I create for them will also be usable for years to come.
