Virtual Social Stories: Where the Future Becomes History

My Students

My students this year are an amazing bunch of kids. More than ever before, these 8th graders are interested in learning the history of our state and are linking historical events to their personal lives. Those lives, backgrounds, and stories come from all over the planet, from places like Japan, Nicaragua, Iran, Korea, Haiti, Spain, Columbia, Nigeria, and 20 other countries. When they are able, they bring in so many different unique and worldly views, that they begin to shape the discussion and everyone benefits.

From wondering about how the current political climate has been shaped by past events to the ever-changing socioeconomic status and its effect on people, my students are proving that our future is well on its way in very capable hands.

My Project

Using personal devices in school has become for many, a necessity. While these devices are able to help me connect my students with historical lessons, story's, and research, they have recently become much more important to the learning process than that. For many students, simply connecting virtually with their teachers is the difference in enjoying the complexities of Social Studies, and finding it to be a be-drudging exercise of futility and frustration.

My project is to remove a very simple barrier from the lives of many students and to give the ability for a virtual classroom to be less frustrating and more accessible for students.

I want to make it easier for students who do not have access to tech devices at home (other than their phone) to connect, plug-in, and have the ability to be a part of our virtual class without having them experience the hassles of the PC to iOS device conundrum, which can be all that stands in the way for many students.
