This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are very diverse. Not only do they come from varying ethnic backgrounds, their life experiences vary also. This lends well to enormous opportunities for success. Still, our students rank in the bottom 100 schools in the state of Florida. This is due in part to the circumstances in which many live. My students live in a zone that holds the second highest rate for children living in poverty in the county, second highest teen birth rate, highest cancer deaths in the county, second lowest life expectancy for African Americans in the county, second highest unemployment rate in the county, and rank third in the highest number of homicides in the county. All of these affect a student's ability to learn.
Given the right resources and human capital, my students can and will succeed.
All they need is a fighting chance. They should no longer feel like the stepchild of the district. They are fighters and they are driven. This attitude of confidence and willingness to work hard will propel them out of their current ranking. I'm counting on it!
My Project
My students crave a spark in their lesson delivery. Students in my classroom need to be able to keep pace with educational opportunities and technology. A virtual reality viewer will hold their interests and keep them motivated in my science classroom.
Students who are engaged in their learning and who feel cared for, are motivated to do their best.
Engaging students by providing them with opportunities to walk on the moon and see the inside of a volcano via virtual reality and merge cubes, is a perfect way to build strong scientists and learners. My students will love getting their hands on these virtual reality viewers.
