Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being in a low socioeconomic community, it is important that our students are exposed to a variety of experiences through literature. Our campus and correspondingly, my 2019-2020 school year's class, have a high number of students with special needs and specific behavior problems. Many students are also bilingual and are only exposed to the English language and literature while at school.
Our school maintains high expectations for all students, and I am looking to enhance their experience and encourage a love of reading and a natural disposition to positive behavior regardless of their backgrounds.
My Project
It was difficult to decide whether or not to post this project. I know that this item may not be a need for students, but I know that it will change their lives FOREVER. Through the virtual reality system, my students (most of whom have never left the Northeast side of El Paso) would get to engage with the world in ways that most grown adults have not.
I know that this technology will be a bridge for building vocabulary, understanding of the outside world, history, and geography in a time when we are restricted to the confines of our home.
This technology is something I have not seen in my district yet, and I would love to be able to give my students these experiences of viewing historical sites, famous art museums, exotic locale, and even simple locations like a coast (our students struggle with understanding vocabulary and the idea of a coast because they have never experienced it). I am afraid that this may seem a frivolous item but feel strongly in my heart that it is what my students need.
