This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My physiology students have all been given access to Chromebooks if they did not have their own. They are having to get all of their assignments online and are not getting to do many of the hands on labs that they would have been doing. My physiology students were looking forward to their culminating activity of dissecting a fetal pig. I do this with students every year and some students only take the class because of this experience. Unfortunately with school being cancelled due to Covid-19 they will not be getting this experience. Many of these students are 12 grade students who were taking this course as an extra not required year of science. I would like to buy an online version of the pig lab that costs $200 to use as an alternate to what they would've done. In the class are aspiring doctors and nurses that would benefit from this virtual supplement.
My Project
Many of my physiology students are aspiring doctors and nurses that would benefit from this virtual dissection. They are able to see each of the organ systems and where everything is located. They also will be able to answer questions as they are completing the labs. This is a good supplement to the live version we would have done as our culminating assignment this year.
This virtual lab will help students learn through school closures.
It is stated to be an engaging alternative to hands-on dissection that allows students to explore the anatomy of the fetal pig. Students dissect the digestive, cardiorespiratory, urogenital, endocrine, and skeletal systems of the pig. During each exercise, they remove organs or other anatomical structures from each of the systems and their functions are displayed. A photo and/or video may also be available of the structure at the time of removal. Students are then quizzed on what they have learned; they are asked to replace the organs based on their name or function. A test also follows the completed dissection. As students review the anatomical structures and their functions in each dissection, I will be able to easily track student progress through the Teacher Dashboard. Assessment questions about each separate system are also included.
