Help me give my students the virtual experience of microscope work by using the Microscope Imager Digital Camera, and lab activities modeled by me using the Selfie Ring Light with Cell Phone Holder Stand!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 9th through 12th graders in a mixed urban/suburban area with a large (over 2500) and diverse student population.
Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Northeast.
Because of this diversity, many of our students have come from a variety of social and economic backgrounds and many of our students receive free/reduced priced lunch.
I teach core science and science electives and have learned that students are often disconnected with their "outside-world" and the environment. I strive to make relevant connections form the content we learn to their everyday experiences. I try to teach them to be informed beings that make informed decisions based off of sound and reliable information.
My Project
In the classroom, microscopes are used to teach students about the structure of things too small to be seen with the human eye alone. The individual cells of plants, animals, bacteria and yeast can all be seen using a compound microscope. Comparing these organisms helps students learn about the variety of life on Earth. Additionally, individual parts of the cell can be seen as students learn about their specific functions.
Whether they are watching the demonstration in class or remotely from home, these tools will enable students to engage in the experience of microscope work to explore a whole new world!
The Ring-Light with Cellphone Holder & Phone Camera Lens Kit will allow me to use my smartphone to cast & record demonstrations. While the USB Still & Live Video Microscope Imager & Universal Smartphone Adapter will grant students the opportunity look at REAL specimens - not just images that have been Googled!
Additionally, the way in which microscopes work can be used to teach students about the properties of light, the physics behind lenses and mirrors and staining techniques for various specimens.
More than half of students from low‑income households
