This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work as a first grade ICT (Integrative Collaborative Team) teacher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My students are a mixture of both special education and general education students. Most of my students are of Latino descent and are English Language Learners.
My children do not have it easy.
Many of my students’ parents do not speak English, some come from foster homes, and some live in shelters. Many of them do not know when or where their next meal is coming from. Yet these children come to school every single day with smiles on their faces, ready and willing to learn. My students have so much potential to excel in school and beyond, but they do not have the proper tools and materials in order to do so.
My Project
My students are learning virtually this year. It is not always easy to learn from home, but they are doing a great job.
I would like to add some virtual guided reading books to our arsenal of virtual learning tools.
These virtual guided reading books will allow me to work with my students in small groups. Students can practice what they learn in small groups after the lesson has finished. These guided reading books will help my class learn important phonics and decoding skills as well as working on their comprehension. I know that with these virtual guided reading books, students will continue to improve their reading.
