Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school where most of the students are English Language Learners and have little to no access to the English language at home. The majority of my students receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch and often times live in a household with more than one family.

My class is full of eager and excited kindergartners ready to learn; however, the vast majority of my students have never been to preschool and are not familiar with the concept of school.

Many times they come not knowing the alphabet, how to count to ten, or how to write their names.

Despite these circumstances, my students work hard every day of the school year and are dedicated to learning and becoming responsible and respectful students. They overcome so many obstacles on a daily basis and often look at school and our classroom as a place of stability and comfort. They truly want to be successful and the pride they feel when they leave to first grade is both moving and overwhelming for me.

My Project

A love for reading and the magic of books is something that I hope every student in my class walks away with at the end of the school year.

The majority of my students have not had much exposure to literature prior to stepping in my classroom and as such have not been able to experience the joy of listening to stories read aloud to them.

Read aloud time in class is always a favorite of my students. They love listening to stories that make them laugh, teach them new concepts, or help them to better understand the world around them.

The books that are part of this project will give my students another opportunity for them to listen to both fiction and non-fiction stories in class. Requested titles include How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow?, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Ugly Duckling, Chicken Little, The Gingerbread Man, The Leaves on the Trees, A Tree for All Seasons, Apples for Everyone, and Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie.

These books will be used during independent group time in our class listening center. We already have the books on CD but only have one copy of each book for students to use while they listen along. Multiple copies of each book will allow more students to take advantage of the listening center at the same time.
