My class is full of eager and excited kindergartners ready to learn. I teach at a Title 1 school where most of the students are English Language Learners and have little to no access to the English language at home. The vast majority of my students have never been to preschool and are not familiar with the concept of school. Many times they come not knowing the alphabet, how to count to 10, or how to write their names. The majority of my students receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch and often times live in a household with more than one family.
Despite these circumstances, my students work hard throughout the year and are dedicated to learning to read and write and be responsible and respectful students. They overcome so many obstacles on a daily basis and often look at school and our classroom as a place of stability and comfort. They want to be successful and the pride they feel when they leave to first grade knowing they are truly ready is both moving and overwhelming for me.
