My Students
My scholars are diverse group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources and experiences usually available students their age living in the United States.
As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning for them through project based learning where they will be able to nurture their basic reading/math skills, encourage critical thinking and collaboration with others and empower them with the skills necessary to be successful 21st century learners.
These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning, when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.
My Project
I simply love the project “Around the World in 180 Days!” by Ms. Abell, SC. In this project, students will use ViewMaster Virtual Reality Viewers and iPod Touches for virtual field trips. Although students are not able to visit the Smithsonian museums in person, they will still be able to experience them through the View-Master Experience Pack: Smithsonian.
This project will revolutionize learning for Science and Social Studies by allowing students to visit and experience different ecosystems and countries in 360 degrees without ever leaving the classroom.
Visiting a Desert Ecosystem, or visiting the Smithsonian museums isn’t something that is easily possible for students living in Hawaii. By donating to this project, you’ll be bringing the world to them!
