Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have so many violists we are out of instruments!
I teach orchestra in a middle and high school in North Carolina.
Both schools have a high percentage of low-income families. I have had good success with recruiting because I have been able to offer school-owned instruments for my students to borrow. Our program offers both regular classes during the school day and after-school opportunities. We enjoy strong support from the community but funds are limited.
My Project
My students need a new viola to keep our group growing. Most orchestras struggle to have enough violas to fill out a full orchestra sound. Students can be reluctant to take on this lower-sounding sibling to the violin. Our group has had so much growth in the viola sections that I am out of instruments and students are having to share, meaning that they can't take their instruments home to practice. My students are eager to learn to play good music and ask me daily when they will be able to practice at home.
By helping us fund this viola you will be bringing the full joy of learning to play a string instrument to a young, budding musician.
This gift will continue to give for many years as we pass the viola on to new students joining the program.
