This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our 5th grade class listens to jazz often during our independent or partner work. "West coast" and "Cool" jazz, specifically. (Dave Brubeck, Art Pepper, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis).

The students LOVE having their jazz music to help them focus on their assignments.

Currently, I stream from my phone to a blu-tooth speaker, which is great and convenient, but only I get the benefit of seeing the album and artist and song. This is something I want my students to experience for themselves.

My goal is to raise enough to get a decent record player and some funds to start our record collection. This way, we could have a DJ of the day who keeps the music going and to display the album art while the vinyl is playing to help students make the connection between the music and the artist. Physical media is very rare for this generation, and I would like to bring some of it back.

I already have a receiver and speakers (thanks Dad!), but need the record player and some records to play.

I would love to send them into middle school with not only an aural understanding of this era of jazz, but a conceptual understanding of the artists and albums as well.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
