Our lab is in serious need of updating. In the world of science, being hands on makes all the difference between being engaged and learning or just getting through the material. Simply getting by is not good enough anymore.
With budgets being small, this equipment will give a much needed update to our lab, allow students to have same opportunities that can be given in larger school districts, and allow them to succeed in my science classroom.
Year after year, I must make a decision if I need to order supplies to conduct experiments, equipment to replace old and outdated equipment, or office supplies to replenish what I have used up. This is a decision that no teacher should have to make, yet an easy one because a teacher is not going to sacrifice the students needs for their own.
The stereo microscopes will aid in replacing the over 30 year old ones we have now. We will be able to see samples and specimens more closely and clearly with increased zoom power and eyepieces that are not scratched up. The mechanical devices will work properly again without having to rig something up to get it to stay at the correct position. The backlights will work. Things will work like they should in 2024. Life Science will be enjoyable again.
The hotplates will a much needed update as well. My Lab Physical Science classes are currently using portable electric burners and manually stirring their experiments. Not only is this old technology, but it dangerous at the same time. We will be able to conduct our reactions and experiments safely, but also in a timely matter. This will allow me to get in more hands on activity that the students will benefit from.
