I am fortunate enough to serve both students and teachers, within our K-5 building. Because of this, I have observed teachers who are making many efforts to teach with rigor and students who work hard to implement strategies taught, with integrity and effort. As a reading specialist, I can describe the classroom environments, school-wide, as rigorous and full of learning.
Self-reflection is powerful and both teachers and students deserve opportunities for this experience.
Our students receive constant feedback about teacher noticings and peer suggestions. Our teachers receive feedback with administration evaluations, parent observations, and student comments. However, neither the student nor the teacher has opportunities of self-reflection and their own feedback, based upon their observation of themselves.
Because of these factors, the classroom environment is one of potential. There is a sense that there is something more to both teaching and learning, but no one seems to know what it is. Teachers and students are required to set goals and show growth through these goals; however, the power in setting such goals is diminished by the fact that many are only setting goals from others’ expectations. We are seeking a system that helps support this type of goal setting!
My Project
Teachers will be using this to record instruction and learning within the classroom. He/She will then self-reflect on what has been recorded and set goals for future changes within instruction to impact learning. The Swivl system tracks the teacher by following the remote and mic, held by the teacher. The iPad will allow for compatibility with our current technology and can hold recordings for future viewing and debriefing by both the teacher and/or student.
We're ready for a system that helps us to reflect on our teaching and student learning!
We know we will see results in student achievement through our focus on our own teaching.
