My Students

We are a second grade classroom in a German immersion program. The students spend half of each day learning science, social studies, math and health in German and half of the day learning reading, writing, spelling and math in English. They are hard workers and love learning in a variety of ways.

Our school is a K-8 charter school.

Our student body is diverse in terms of socioeconomic status, native/family background, and involvement in traveling abroad. We have a very low transiency rate because our students love the German immersion program. In fact, in less than ten years, our school of less than 100 students has reached our capacity at over 450 students. We have recently received the honor of being named a German Center of Excellence. The AATG German Centers of Excellence program identifies and honors excellence at all levels of instruction K-16. The designation is presented to a well-established and growing German program with strong support from the administration, colleagues, alumni, parents, and students.

My Project

There are many programs and computer apps available to students for learning and practicing essential learning skills. I like for my students to encounter learning using a variety of tools since learning happens in a variety of styles. Being able to use technology in the classroom encourages learners to understand content whether they are visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners - as well as musical, spatial, mathematical/logic thinkers. Because our financial access to technology in the classroom is limited, having these materials available at school is a must. Many of my students do not have access at home, and physically traveling to the public library is nearly impossible. I feel it is my responsibility as a teacher to make sure every student has equal opportunity to learn. Students will be able to use the iPad and computer in whole group instruction, as well as in small groups and individually. I will also use it in my classroom management system with an app called Class Dojo.

Because we are a charter school, our funds for technology from the district are limited.

Your donations will give students the opportunity to use technology on an educationally appropriate level. Many of our computer programs are leveled, meaning students "test" into the program and the program gives them instruction and practice specifically in the areas that they need as individuals. Healthy brain activity can occur when "video games" are designed to engage students in academics.
